Summer is here and so are long weekends and car rides. Prevent the backseat boredom and keep kids busy and happy with these fun and simple activities -
Buy some window markers and let the kids go to town on the back windows. Wipe them clean with a baby wipe.
I Spy. “I spy with my little eye, something blue.” This easy-to-learn game is perfect for preschoolers, and can keep them entertained for unbelievably long periods of time. The directions are simple: One person spies something and recites the line, ending in a clue. Everyone else takes turns trying to guess the mystery item.
Silly Putty. It's fun to squish and stretch and, since it's more elastic than Play-Doh, it's less likely to end up stuck permanently between the seats.
Audiobooks. Toddlers as young as 2 years can follow along with stories, so pick up an audiobook and delve into a fun story on your trip. Check out Peter Rabbit Tales for your toddler (age 2 - 4) or James and the Giant Peach for your 5 - 7 yr old.
Deck of Cards. Pick up a pack at the dollar store. Play a game with your older child or just hand the opened box to your toddler with no rules attached. The cards may end up getting tossed everywhere, bent, missing, but it will keep them busy for a while!
