Sidewalk Talk with Stephanie Choi from Sawyer

Name: Stephanie Choi

Occupation: Co-founder of Sawyer

Children: Madeline (3), Emory (11 months)

What’s your favorite kid-friendly brunch spot in your neighborhood?

Brunch is my most favorite meal, so there are a few, and we always try new places as they open too.

La Slowteria in Carroll Gardens is the best Mexican food in the area, super family-friendly, and they let my daughter help make the guacamole! Also, La Vara in Cobble Hill—there are no words! Just amazing brunch (and dinner).

Favorite playgrounds in your area?

We live right by Brooklyn Bridge Park so we are there often, especially at the water lab in the summer. We also frequent Pierrepont Playground in Brooklyn Heights, as they have a little bit of everything (swings, slides, monkey bars).

What are your children’s favorite activities?

Since we started Sawyer, Maddie frequents all sorts of classes. She especially loves Ballet. We also just started Mandarin class at Lango on the weekends. My husband loves taking her there, and it's amazing to watch her pick up language at such a young age!

We also love checking out museums with the kids. It’s a great way to see different neighborhoods in the city and awesome for rainy days.

Two foods your little one(s) are obsessed with?

Maddie loves dim sum, especially congee and pork buns! Emory just started eating, but so far loves bananas and mangos.

What are you most strict about when it comes to parenting?

Sleep and manners.

What’s your favorite way to unwind?

Exercise and wine (usually not at the same time ;-).

What does a day in the life of you and your children look like?

My oldest is in school in the afternoons, and they both usually spend the morning at the library or classes. After school is out, off to the playground!

Favorite rainy day activity…

Baking or museums.

What is your favorite part about being a parent?

Watching my kids grow into little people with such distinct personalities... They are such strong-willed kids. It’s been fun watching them grow.

One thing you miss about your pre-parenting life…

Sleeping in!

What do you do when your children go to bed?

That’s when my husband and I get to relax and catch up on our days, also enjoy dinner together.

How did you come up with your children’s names?

Madeline is named after my great grandmother. I always loved the name and she was such a strong woman that I was proud to name her after her. We just really loved the name Emory and the meaning of it.
