Annie Pichan

The Vocal Lab NYC

Annie Pichan didn't set out to start the Vocal Lab, but when your favorite childhood activity is acting out "The Phantom of the Opera" on repeat, it makes sense. Hear how this Michigan-native-turned-New Yorker approaches helping her students accomplish their musical goals.

How do children benefit from your classes?

I strive to be an example for my students by demonstrating preparedness, positivity, and enthusiasm, and I encourage them to do the same throughout our studies together. It is my goal not only to educate but to also inspire their continued education and exploration as young artists and musicians beyond the classroom.

What has been the most fulfilling part of your job?

Seeing my students accomplish their goals and enjoy the fruits of their labor!  This could be on a small or large scale, for instance, getting through an exercise with more ease, or gaining a role in a musical or play we’ve worked towards.

What was your favorite thing to do as a child?

Probably practice the part of Christine from “The Phantom of the Opera” (on repeat, thankfully I had my parents support!), or write short stories.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

To teleport anywhere and everywhere (specifically, so I never have to take the subway again!)

Share your personal motto or best piece of advice you received in life.

To stay positive, be grateful and be a problem solver. It can be challenging at times to implement this mentality into everyday life, but I combat that by taking things task at a time.  Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all.

What about your childhood motivated you to stay involved in your passion?

Simply for the absolute love of it all.  The ups, the downs, even some of the more mundane parts. I have always loved everything about music, singing, and performance, and strive to learn for the rest of my life.

Dream job if you weren't running your business?

This pretty much is my dream job, but I have goals over the next few years to expand my small business and open a school.

What hobbies do you have?

Weight lifting, yoga, running, reading, swimming in Lake Michigan in the summer (it’s where I’m from)

Favorite spots in your neighborhood?

A Senegalese restaurant called Café Ru Dix and our local bookstore, Hullabaloo.
